The questions that come up

The questions that come up when a live bet behaves unexpectedly

Most of these are asked immediately after something has gone wrong, which is the worst moment to find out the answer. Each one below is short, and each one links to the page that treats it properly.

§1Why an in-play bet is voided after an event

A bet placed after an event the market has not yet priced is struck on a state that no longer exists. Operators therefore normally void such bets, and the rule is published in the live-betting section of their terms. Read it before the event, not after the goal.

Full treatment: why prices halt.

§2What bet delay is for

Bet delay is the interval between submission and acceptance, held deliberately so that a bettor cannot be faster than the repricing engine. It is why the price you saw is a quote rather than a binding offer.

Full treatment: the delay chain.

§3Why the accepted price differs from the clicked price

Because the market repriced in the window between your click and the acceptance. The difference is slippage, it is systematically unfavourable, and it is measurable by recording both numbers.

Full treatment: how fast prices move.

§4Whether live markets can be beaten

Professional participants trade them; the delay exists because of them. For most people the relevant facts are the margin paid on every bet, the fact that live margins are usually wider than pre-match margins, and slippage that runs against the bettor by design. Nothing on this site claims that in-play betting is a route to profit.

Full treatment: how in-play prices are made and false speed.

§5What the market clock measures

A data-provider field displayed for context. It is not the officials' clock and it does not settle bets. Because it is public and identical for every participant, it is not an advantage.

Full treatment: the market clock.

§6Whether you can see the game better than the market

A live price is the result of everyone trading into it, including professionals following the same sport. Anything visible on the broadcast is already priced. Write the observation and the price down before betting, then watch what the price does next.

Full treatment: false speed.

§7Whether live betting is more dangerous

The risk is distributed rather than concentrated: many fast decisions, each small, with the margin paid on each and a reason always available. That makes the number of bets the variable that matters most, and structural limits more effective than intentions.

Full treatment: constraining in-play and the pre-flight list.

§8Getting help

National gambling-harm helplines are free, confidential and listed by country on most regulators' websites; the operator you use is required to publish them too. Deposit, loss and time limits, a time-out, and self-exclusion are available on licensed accounts, and self-exclusion is the strongest of them because it outlasts a bad run.

Full treatment: constraining in-play and the limits of this site.

The sponsored link

The link, and what it is not

Every affiliate link on this page is sponsored and pays this site if you open an account through it. It is not an answer to any of the questions above, it is not a recommendation, and it does not change the rules, the delay or the margin that apply to your bets.

Affiliate disclosure and risk warning

Every affiliate link on this page and in the header is a sponsored link to a partner operator, and we may be paid if you open an account through it, at no extra cost to you. That link pays us; it does not price the market for you, it does not make the market faster, and it is never a recommendation to bet. Nothing on this page is betting, financial or legal advice, and no price, figure or outcome on it is a prediction. 18+ only. Betting is gambling, and in-play betting is the form of it that asks for the most decisions in the least time. The operator's margin is built into every live price, the market moves faster than any person can, and a bet placed on a picture that is already seconds old is a bet on the past. Gambling can cause serious financial harm, including debt and damage to relationships and mental health. Never stake money you cannot afford to lose, never borrow to bet, and never increase a stake to chase a loss. Free, confidential support is available in most countries from national gambling-harm helplines, for bettors and for the people around them.
